Undergraduate Internships
Are you a first or second year looking to gain some experience of research? The interaction and modelling lab are hoping to recruit two undergraduate interns for the academic year 2022/2023. You’ll be working on real research projects, helping to collect and analyse data, with the ultimate goal of getting a paper published. The positions are unpaid, but this is great experience for anyone considering a career in research, and a successful project will lead to co-authorship of an academic paper.
What would an intern be expected to do?
The interns will join an existing research project, supervised by one or more members of academic staff. There may also be PhD students and/or research associates involved in the project.
Interns would join the project for the full academic year, from mid-October 2022 through to the end of Semester 2, 2023.
Interns would have the opportunity to become involved in every aspect of the research project. Activities will vary from project to project, but are likely to involve the following:
- Developing/deploying research software
- Recruiting participants
- Collecting data (e.g. running user studies)
- Analysing and interpreting data
- Preparing a paper to disseminate findings
Who should apply?
To apply for our internship you should:
- Be a first or second year enrolled in Computer Science, Computer Science (Human Computer Interaction), or Computer Science and Mathematics. Students from all variants of these programmes are welcome (e.g. Industrial Exeprience, BSc., MEng.).
- Maintain a strong academic performance throughout the internship period. This means that:
- First years: You must maintain an overall grade average of 60% in your first year. If your end of semester 1 results drop below this threshold then you will be asked to stop the internship in order to focus on your studies.
- Second years: have a first year overall grade average of 60% or above. You must also maintain an overall grade average of 60% in Semester 1 of your second year. If your end of Semester 1 results drop below this threshold then you will be asked to stop the internship in order to focus on your studies.
- Have a passion for research with human participants.
- Reflect on, and be open about, gaps in your knowledge.
- Be able to collaborate with and learn from others.
- Have strong attention to detail.
